How this calculation works

Three meters drive most of a hotel's operational footprint, and this calculator handles all three:

Electricity is nearly always the dominant line. Air-conditioning runs around the clock in a tropical property; the laundry plant, pool pumps and filtration, lifts, lighting and cold rooms stack on top. Gas is the kitchen's fuel — piped supply for ranges and ovens in most city hotels, LPG cylinders where there is no piped connection or for banquet and outdoor cooking.

The scope split matters for reporting. Grid electricity is Scope 2 because the emissions happen at a power station you don't own. Gas and LPG burn on your premises, so they are Scope 1 — your combustion, your direct emissions. Enter monthly figures from your bills and the calculator returns both, with the factor and source printed under each result.

The factors

Switch region and the electricity factor follows: the UK uses DEFRA 2025 (0.207 kgCO₂e/kWh), the US uses EPA eGRID (0.3712), and other markets use approximate national averages from Ember's yearly electricity data — Malaysia roughly 0.61, Indonesia roughly 0.69, Thailand roughly 0.45, Japan roughly 0.46, Australia roughly 0.53. Gas and LPG keep the same factors in every region, because combustion is chemistry, not geography: a kilowatt-hour of natural gas or a litre of LPG releases the same CO₂ wherever it burns. The DEFRA factors are published under the UK's Open Government Licence, which is what lets us serve them free with attribution.

Operating a hotel vs staying in one

DEFRA also publishes a completely different hotel number: emissions per room-night, for companies counting their employees' hotel stays. The 2025 figures are 22.5 kgCO₂e per room-night in Singapore, 10.2 in the UK, and 18.5 as a world average.

The two views answer different questions. The per-room-night factor is a national average across every class of property, applied by your corporate guests' sustainability teams to estimate their Scope 3 business-travel emissions when they have nothing better. Your metered bills are your operational footprint — the Scope 1 and 2 you report as the operator.

The connection is where it gets commercial. When a client's travel team books 500 nights at your property, they will count 500 × 22.5 = 11,250 kgCO₂e against your hotel unless you hand them a property-specific intensity. An efficient hotel that can show a lower per-room-night figure from real meter data has a concrete number to sell with — corporate RFPs increasingly ask for exactly this.

A worked example

Take a 100-room Singapore hotel over one month: 50,000 kWh of electricity, 5,000 kWh of piped gas in the main kitchen, and 800 litres of LPG for the banquet kitchen.

Electricity: 50,000 kWh × 0.4020 = 20,100 kgCO₂e Piped gas: 5,000 kWh × 0.18293 = 914.65 kgCO₂e LPG: 800 litres × 1.5594 = 1,247.52 kgCO₂e Total: 22,262.17 kgCO₂e ≈ 22.3 tCO₂e for the month

Two things stand out. First, electricity is over 90% of the total — 20,100 of 22,262 kg — which is why chiller efficiency and laundry scheduling dominate hotel decarbonisation long before anyone talks about kitchens. Second, divide by activity: at 90% occupancy the hotel sold about 2,700 room-nights that month, so these three meters come to roughly 8.2 kgCO₂e per occupied room-night — well under the 22.5 generic factor. That is not automatically a claim of virtue: the generic factor averages across all property classes, and your metered figure here covers only three inputs. But it shows why measuring beats defaulting — the moment the number comes from your own meters, it is yours to explain and to improve. Run a similar month twelve times and the property lands near 267 tCO₂e a year from these meters alone.

What this calculator doesn't cover

Hotels have more emission sources than three meters, and honesty about that is part of the method:

  • Refrigerant leaks. Chillers, split units and cold rooms lose refrigerant over time, and those losses are Scope 1 — often material for hotels. Quantifying them needs the refrigerant type and mass recharged, which this tool doesn't collect.
  • Singapore's piped town gas. The gas field applies the DEFRA natural gas factor as an international default. Singapore's piped town gas is a manufactured gas with its own characteristics, so treat the gas line as an approximation and flag it in your methodology notes if gas is a large share of your total.
  • District cooling and purchased chilled water. These are Scope 2 but need their own supplier-specific factors, not the grid electricity factor.
  • Diesel generators and shuttle vehicles. Scope 1, but calculated per litre of fuel — use the fleet fuel calculator for those.
  • Market-based accounting. If you buy renewable energy certificates, the GHG Protocol lets you report a market-based Scope 2 figure alongside this location-based one; that adjustment is out of scope here.
  • Scope 3. Outsourced laundry, food procurement, waste, and your guests' travel to the property all sit outside these three meters.

Where this fits in your reporting

For a hotel operator, electricity is Scope 2 and piped gas or LPG is Scope 1 — the same split whether the property is an independent boutique, part of a listed hospitality group, a university's guest lodge, or a public agency's training centre. For a corporate guest, the room-nights they book land in their Scope 3, category 6, which is precisely when their sustainability teams start asking properties for a real per-room-night number instead of the generic 22.5 kgCO₂e default. Purchased grid electricity is Scope 2 — the emissions happen at a power station you don't own. Singapore uses the EMA-published factor of 0.4020 kgCO2e/kWh (2024 data year, SES 2025), the value this calculator currently applies for Singapore; activity dated within 2024 resolves to the prior 0.4085 kgCO2e/kWh figure instead. The UK uses DEFRA 2025 (0.207) and the US uses EPA eGRID (0.3712). Other regions use approximate national averages from Ember's yearly electricity data — for example roughly 0.61 for Malaysia and 0.45 for Thailand. Our kitchen is run by an outsourced F&B operator — whose emissions are these?
It depends on your organisational boundary. If the gas meter and supply contract are yours (operational control), the combustion is usually your Scope 1 even if a tenant does the cooking. If the operator holds its own contract and meter, it is theirs to report and appears in your Scope 3. Check the GHG Protocol's boundary guidance before deciding.
